Switching Addends

EQ: Why can you add addends in any order?

In class: Lesson 1.6

              Adding two numbers, then switching the order

              Example: 3 + 2 = 5, 2 + 3 + 5

              Workbook pages 44-48

 

At home: Have your student use objects within your house to add. Example, 3 pennies plus 4 pennies equal 7. Then, Switch the numbers in order. 4 pennies plus 3 pennies still equals 7.

EQ: How can you show all the ways to make a number?

In class: Lesson 1.7

              Using cubes to show different ways to find the same sum.

              Example:

              4 + 2 = 6, 2 + 4 = 6

              3 + 3 = 6

              1 + 5 = 6, 5 + 1 =5

              0 + 6 = 6
