Tennessee Tech, B.S. in Elementary Education (2020)
Hi there! My name is Katherine Carlson, and I am very excited to be apart of the L.E.S. team as a 5th-grade math and science teacher. Just a little background knowledge on me...I am married to my amazing husband, Clayton. Together, we are currently remodeling our first home. (I have a fun graphic with little facts about me attached below!) As the school year begins, I am sure that you are wondering what to expect. First, I want you to know that my door is always open. If you have any questions or concerns, please, reach out!
Now, let me give you a quick look into what math and science in my classroom will look like. You can expect that your child will be introduced to various programs that incorporate technology, robotics, and even engineering! When it comes to math, I am a firm believer in making concepts come alive. There is math all around us and it is my job to guide students to discover how they can take concepts learned in class and apply them to the real world. I have worked very hard this summer (and will continue to) apply for grants to add resources to my classroom for your child! There are many reasons to love S.T.E.M., but I love to infuse it in my lessons as I have witnessed the way it enriches student's vocabulary, engagement, interest, and even creates a newfound love for the sciences!
Next, I wanted to briefly share with you my fondest memory in elementary school. Coincidently, it was when I was in 5th grade. My sweet momma, Julia, was actually one of my 5th-grade teachers. Her and her teaching partner, Liz, taught us so many things that year. However, towards the end of the year, we began the WW2 unit. We had various research projects, read Number the Stars, listened to interviews from veterans of WW2, and more. This unit sparked a love and desire to learn as much as I could about WW2. Fast forward to the present and I still work on furthering my knowledge regarding WW2 and even began my own personal WW2 collection. My husband also loves and is intrigued by WW2, and we are planning on taking a trip to Europe where we will follow Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Divison, U.S. Army in the next few years!
