1. Our fall book fair is underway! Most classes will visit the book far during their regularly scheduled library time. The full schedule can be accessed from the link below. Volunteers are still needed to help during the book fair.
2. LAUNCH (our after-school program) begins this week on Wednesday, September 9th. Students are not allowed to stay for LAUNCH without a completed application on file. If you have questions, contact your child's teacher.
3. September is Attendance Awareness Month. LES families are invited to participate in the attendance store at FLMS on September 26th. 1 day of attendance = 1 point to spend at the attendance store. We are also recruiting volunteers to greet students throughout the month of September. See flyers for both these attendance initiatives below.
4. Each Tuesday and Thursday, we receive refrigerated/frozen food items from our local Weigel's. Weigel's operates a surplus food rescue that allows items that have been pulled from their hot bars to be donated to schools and other organizations. LCBOE member, Scott Newman, coordinates this program for LES. We currently offer these food bags to any interested students. If you do not want your child to bring home a food bag, let his/her teacher know.

6. We can't thank our families enough for the support we received for the Battle of the Bridge food drive. LES collected $4510.40 plus food donations. We raised the equivalent of 24,953 pounds of food for the community!

Each year in February our ELL (English Language Learners) take an exam called the ELPA21, English Language Proficiency Assessment. They are assessed on how much English they are able to use in the four tested areas of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. This test is hard! To pass or exit from the ELL program, they need to reach proficiency in ALL FOUR AREAS! All of these students did that last year. We are so proud of their effort on the test, but most of all, their ability to be successful in both languages in their classrooms and in their neighborhoods. There were also 5 students who exited the ELPA who are now in 6th grade at FLMS. We wish we could have celebrated with them today.
We did celebrate with the current first through fifth grade students who exited last year, today. They had a pancake party with all the fixings, made a personalized pencil bag, and a cool keychain swag for their bag! They were so creative and we loved hearing the conversations they had as they created their keychains. If you see any of these students, give them a high five and congratulate them on their achievement!

LES Parents: Here is some important information to help you stay in the loop!
1. It's Battle of the Bridge Week! Flyers were sent home on Friday with students. As a reminder, we are collecting non-perishable foods and money for the Battle of the Bridge food drive throughout the week.
2. LAUNCH begins on September 9th. The last day for permission forms is Friday, September 11th. Clubs will fill fast, so return your forms ASAP. Club schedule is attached. Clubs are subject to change, but we hope this schedule will be set for the Fall. In January we might add and/or change some groups. Students will choose their club on the day they attend. After the first couple of weeks, we will see if we need to adjust the sizes of groups. Students do not need to attend every day.
Snacks are provided for LAUNCH. If your child has food allergies or specific needs, please provide them with a snack.
3. ELL News: We will be celebrating the students in first through fifth grade that passed the ELL exit test. Click below to view the flyer.

1. LAUNCH (our after-school program) will kick off on September 9th. Spots will be limited. Let your child's teacher or the office know if you need a registration packet for your child.
2. Students are considered chronically absent if they miss more than 10% of school days - for any reason. That's about 2 days per month. We want to work with families to minimize absences. Please contact Dr. Elliott at elliottl@loudoncounty.org with any questions or if you need support.
3. We're always recruiting volunteers to greet students as they arrive each morning. If your family, church group, business, or organization wants to sign up to volunteer once or on a regular basis, contact Mrs. Weaver at weaverg@loudoncounty.org.
4. We had our first fire drill last week and will have several more safety drills this week. We will practice our shelter-in-place weather drill and have a bus safety lesson with our transportation department.
5. We will start recording conduct grades for all students this week. Conduct grades are a way for us to better track and support students who are struggling with behaviors. Our focus is always on teaching students appropriate behaviors.
6. Our fall book fair kicks off on Friday, September 4th! More details will be shared about eWallet and specific schedules.
7. Students are already earning points in their Parent DIG Point Banks! We are making some changes to the program and will post updated information soon!
8. If you are still struggling to connect to "Rooms" on the Loudon County Schools app, please let us know! Reach out to your child's teacher or the office. We are working through those issues with Apptegy and our technology department.

1. We have ice cream in stock and will begin ice cream sales at lunch. First through fifth graders may purchase ice cream any day. Kindergarten students may purchase ice cream on Fridays only. Ice cream is $1.
2. We will start marking students tardy this week. Students receive a tardy slip if they are not in class at the 8:00 bell. Tardies can accumulate toward absences and truancy. Be sure to drop students off in plenty of time to walk to their classrooms before the bell. If students are eating breakfast at school, they need to be dropped off by 7:40.
3. Please establish a regular dismissal transportation plan with your children. If changes are necessary, contact the school office as early in the day as possible. It's always good to let teachers know in the Rooms app as well, but because they are actively teaching, they may miss those messages.
4. Be sure to return registration forms as soon as possible. All students are considered full-pay for breakfast and lunch until they are approved for free or reduced prices. It's also crucial that we have updated health information and emergency contacts for each child.
5. Now that all K-5 students have attended for their staggered start day, we will not allow parents to walk students to class each morning. We will have staff at the front of the building to help escort students who are still learning the routine.

We are excited to for many of our students to start back to school tomorrow! As a reminder, 1st through 5th graders whose last names begin with letters A through K attend tomorrow, Tuesday, August 4th. 1st through 5th graders whose last names begin with letters L through Z will attend on Wednesday. August 5th. No students attend on Thursday, August 6th due to the election. However, we will have Open House on Thursday from 3:30 until 6:30. See the attached flyers for more information.
